We knew it wouldn’t last forever, but each day we would turn on our tv or log on to our email and be amazed that our cable was still going.

You see, we never called to turn cable on when we moved December 1st….it just magically was still on!

But as luck would have it, the internet stopped. Boo. And now we are undecided on how to continue…call them up and get started? Look into a different company? Go without? Use our cell service to tether a network? We are trying to eliminate and/or lower as many bills as we can right now.

Bleh. So, as I’m typing this with my phone, bear with me as I might be gone for a while. There’s only so much I can do on my phone before I get frustrated with typing with one finger and staring at a teeny screen. Such first world problems!!!

Don’t worry, the shop is still up and running as I can still recieve orders and emails. Have a great week, all.

hey all, just a heads up the shop is back open. it was a nice break being able to focus on family, traveling and resting up from sickness, but it’s time to get going again if i want to get anywhere near my sales goal this year! it’s looking a little slim in there right now…i happily didn’t work on it at all for the last couple weeks, but now it’s sad and empty! for those of you who have purchased from the shop, or had hopes to…is there anything that you’ve been hoping to see in there? would love any of your feedback.

i have been throwing around the idea of a redesign and i’m not really sure where i want to go with that idea…refresh this blog, spruce up the shop, or just add new items to be sold. we’ll see. i don’t want to force anything, so if i get struck with a creative notion then that’s great, and if nothing comes, then that’s ok too. i think i’m giving myself another unspoken goal this year of focusing more on a genuine online ‘me’, versus just keeping up with what i see others doing.

if you’ve been along for the ride thus far, thank you! i was pleasantly surprised to recently find out i was only one away from 100 ‘likes’ on facebook, and even my twitter followers and google blog followers have quietly grown. it’s humbling and also nice feeling to know i can connect with you on some level!

hope you have a splendid week, friends.

one thing about moving that i enjoy is getting to know a new area of the city…portland is divided up roughly into 4 quadrants, with the willamette river splitting it between east and west, and the main thoroughfare burnside* splitting it between north and south. in the 2 and a half years we’ve been here, we have lived in 3 of the 4!

our apartment complex, what was originally military housing built in the 40′s is quite close to what seems like a semi-affluent area…on the edge of an old golf course and surrounded by picturesque houses and tudor cottages…i LOVE my walk to the bus for work. on the other edge we have an asian supermarket, and if it weren’t for wil’s current job that dips into polynesian and asian flavors, i doubt we would have vetnured in there.

we took a little jaunt as he was on a mission for a couple things, and i immediately was taken aback by the culture within these four walls. i felt like i had been transported to a completely different place!

nearly half of the produce i couldn’t identify.

a good portion of the meats and fish made my stomach a little queasy.

i was blown away at the vast selection of soy sauces and noodles…nearly an entire aisle for each.

and my curiosity went wild thinking about their cultural traditions when it came to parties and entertaining…paper shirts and cardboard watches?

although the quality might not be heirloom, i kind of got sucked in to all the kitshy porcelain, like this teapot for 4 dollars.

this was one of those days where i dreamed about our kids and hoped we continue to live in places that offer cultural field trips right around the corner. the world is so big and people are so different…around the globe, as well as just down the street!

stopping in to say hello! we had a great time at our families homes…it’s nice having our parents within 30 minutes of one another, but that means lots of driving back and forth each day to even out the time spent. dinner here, dessert here….very full to say the least.

that doesn’t mean i didn’t have thanksgiving leftovers for dinner tonight, though! they are sometimes as good as the first time around.

i’m a big proponent of not doing anything christmasy till after thanksgiving. it’s too special of a time to get passed up, just as autumn is too gorgeous of a season to skip over to winter. but our drive back over the mountain this morning, amidst new snow, helped usher into a feeling of the holiday spirit, and i happily turned on some christmas music while packing boxes. i maybe even sipped some hot chocolate and started perusing layouts for our christmas card this year…

the next week or so will be a bit of a craze for us as we fill all of our spare time with packing, taking trips to the next apartment, being disconnected, etc. i’ll miss you all if you don’t see too much of me, but i trust you all have a fun first week of december ahead of you!

over dinner with both sets of parents, us and our sister and her boyfriend, the questions of your all time favorite ___ came up a time or two. what’s your all time favorite movie? all time favorite musician? we didn’t dwell on the questions too long as you could really turn yourself upside down trying to pinpoint just one thing. plus we playfully argued over each one’s favorites thinking we knew our significant other better than themselves. (‘apocalypse now? there’s no way that’s your favorite!!’)

but for the few seconds i thought about it for myself, deep down i settled on feist as my all time favorite musician. there is something magnetic about her voice and her sound. there are some bands i feel passionately about, but often feel let down with certain albums or songs. but feist has me captivated with everything she does.

it was appropriate timing that just a day or two after i decided this, i heard that her new album is almost out and offering a free streaming sample on the site. so i wanted to share.

i love music, and love hearing new music, but i tend to shy away from recommending…i don’t consider myself a critic or in the know. it’s like what wil’s dad told me one time about wine. it doesn’t matter if it’s a popular, expensive, or even a cheap bottle of wine. if you like it, then it’s a good bottle. i like the music i like, but here’s a little taste of it.

a perfectly autumn sound to usher in the cooler temperatures, warm drinks and cozying up in a chunky sweater.

click here to listen to a stream of the new album ‘metals’….it’ll just ask you your email, and then send you a link to listen. it says ‘confirm & download’ in the email- it’s not downloading the album to your computer, but just access to the stream. just fyi.

let’s get the bad thing out of the way first: i have been struggling with vertigo off and on since this spring. yuck. sometimes it’s debilitating and puts me out of commission. most of the time it’s a nuisance and causes me to move slower than i would like.

it’s definitely no fun to be dizzy and nauseated just from your own movements. no sir.

it hit me out of the blue yesterday morning, waking up with the room spinning, so i didn’t accomplish as much as i had planned. but i am thankful for three things: i found exercises online that if i do them at night before bed, it almost nearly eliminates it by the next day. i lay in goofy positions for 30 seconds at a time, and then sleep on 3 pillows to be as vertical as possible. every time wil comes to bed when i’m like this, he laughs that i look like i’m laying in a coffin. yikes. second, i am thankful that i really don’t have it that bad. i have heard of numerous people who get it so bad that just opening their eyes makes them sick and they can’t get out of bed. i definitely feel for those people, and i wouldn’t wish it on anyone. and third, it’s peaceful to be reassured that there will be a new heaven & earth, and even new bodies! wahoo!

he who was seated on the throne said, “i am making everything new!” then he said, “write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” revelation 21:5

but as for the good thing: the day we left for camping i got the best little package in the mail! i got the sweetest handmade rosette earrings and fabric ‘pearl’ necklace from ragamuffin beauties. they weren’t necessarily camping attire, but i put those earrings on immediately, and wore them pretty much the entire trip. made my jeans and sweatshirts and swimsuits feel a bit more glamorous. i’m thinking that i’ll dress up a tank and some skinny jeans with the necklace next time i go out. jenni sells these on etsy, in a ton of different colors, as well as keeps up a pretty cute blog. you should check out both!

this is a quick post that will consist of me mostly whining. read at your own risk, or feel free to pass by.

wil and i decided to start running. bleh. let me paint a quick picture. wil’s the kind of guy that can not work out for weeks, months, etc, and go run for a few miles and be fine.

me? i loathe running. i’ve never liked it since the awful teen years of having to run the mile in p.e. class. i don’t like the continual repetition of one foot in front of the other. when people say it allows them to think and clear their heads, all i can think about is the running and how crappy i feel. i don’t know if i’m using it as an excuse, but i always feel terrible during running. am i out of shape? more than likely. but my bones and joints always hurt, usually up in my shoulders and chest, and i tell myself that’s not normal and maybe i just don’t have the body to be a runner.

either way, i’m allowing myself this moment right here to get all my complaining out, suck it up, and move on. i’ve never actually run on a regular basis, so who knows if the pain and negativity will go away after getting my body into that cycle? i don’t have any expectations of actually enjoying running over time, but i have my personal reasons of why i am going to give it a try and stick it out as long as i can. i think wil’s ultimate reason is that it’s a free way to stay healthy with all the really tasty (and often really bad) eating that we partake in. i do like that it will be another activity that we can work on together…and he is willing to take it really slow with me to ease into it all. and getting these cows out of the house for more than just their afternoon zoomies will be better for all of us.

i don’t intend to post updates of our schedule or goals or all of that. we have no intended 10k’s or marathons to achieve. i think our main goal right now is to just do it. and for me to not hate it.

last weekend, kris and i had the chance to cater another event for her sister. she was throwing a friend a bridal shower and wanted us to plan a menu that was seasonal and elegant, but simple. we settled on hors d’oeuvre style food and came up with a mix of foods that was interesting, flavorful, vibrant in color and satiating. i couldn’t have done it without kris’ help! and the food… minus a mild dessert-astrophe, was a smashing success.

creme fraiche, pickled radish, yellow current tomato

fried green tomato, slow-roasted pork shoulder, home-made balsamic mustard barbecue sauce

herb cracker, sweet mascarpone cheese, local oregon peach, fleur de sel

black pepper crostini, roasted sweet corn puree, fiery hatch pepper salsa

cherry tomato, feta and thyme tartlet

cold-poached peruvian potato, seared sirloin, carrot green and walnut pesto
